Are you ready for Black Friday later this week? Target certainly is.

After a 40 store trial earlier in 2014, Target stores nationwide will be rolling out a new, more functional app named StoreMode, according to Search Engine Land, that will give unparalleled access to consumers as well as allowing the major retailer to monetize more of its services through advertising.

For example, once a customer enters any of Target’s 2,000  North American retail locations, geofencing will automatically connect with their smart phone and give them access to a wide range of new consumer capabilities, including maps to the specific store that will show them the actual location of a product in its specific aisle

Mobile devices allow you to enjoy the benefits of VoIP through superior apps. While there are plenty of VoIP apps for iOS, Android and BlackBerry, all the lists indicate that Skype and Viber are the most popular ones.

However, these two apps don’t work the same way and they would serve you differently. So which one should you install on your device?

Here is a Skype and Viber comparison based on different parameters.

Ease of Use

While both apps are user-friendly and easy to install, they work differently. Skype requires a username and a password. On the other hand, Viber does not require you to use a username, as it uses the cell phone number for identification purposes. This can be very handy with your cell phone, and contacts. It offers you a better mobile integration. Skype started on the computer platform before moving to mobile platform while Viber started exclusively on a mobile platform.

You knew when you bought your iPad that it would be a great consumption device as well as a productivity tool among other functions. But can your iPad do more than you think? In a word, yes.

While to-do lists and collaboration apps certainly come with their benefits, there’s so much you’re missing out on if you think that’s all the productivity features you’ll find in an iPad. Tap into your iPad’s full potential with the following tips to make you more productive than ever.

1. Use your iPad as a second screen

Working with a single monitor can be time-consuming for many professionals. With the Air Display 2 app, you can turn your iPad into a second screen. This allows you to do two really cool things. First, you can mirror your desktop or laptop screen (on Mac or Windows) on the iPad. This means that a colleague or family member can watch what’s happening on your computer on his or her own screen without crowding you. When mirroring your screen, you can then make changes from your desktop or from your iPad.

Samsung’s Note Edge isn’t like anything you’ve seen in mobile. Devices like the Galaxy Round and G Flex have come close. But rather than having a slight curve that serves no real purpose, Samsung’s phone tries to add some utility in a more interesting way. It’s an idea that seems like it was plucked right out of a Hollywood movie, and we’re still not sure what to make of it.

If you’ve already used the Note 4, the Note Edge will immediately feel familiar; you get the same specs, the same strong build, S Pen support, and chamfered edges that glisten under bright light. But obviously it’s that second screen that makes the Note Edge so different. The entire right side gently slopes down to meet the back of the device, introducing an entirely new element to the experience. It’s something that will attract a lot of curious bystanders.

Despite sharing a lot of the Note 4’s DNA, however, the Edge is slightly smaller, featuring a 5.6-inch screen rather than a 5.7-inch display; the extra curved panel adds an extra 160 pixels of width, though that space is generally used for second screen information. For example, when you’re in an application (like YouTube), that extra 160 pixel space will be a dedicated space that allows you to quickly access app shortcuts, settings, sports scores and more.

Microsoft Reveals Non-Nokia Lumia Smartphone - Microsoft/Windows on CIO Today

smartphone, set to be released by Microsoft next Tuesday, will be the first without the Nokia brand name. Instead, leaked images of the new device show the Microsoft name and logo stamped prominently on the back of the orange handset.

The Nokia-to-Microsoft transition has been expected since Microsoft completed its acquisition of the Nokia Devices and Services business in April. Several Nokia smartphone apps — including Creative Studio, Panorama, Storyteller and Cinemagraph — have also recently been rebranded with the Lumia name.

A blog post on the Nokia Microsoft Conversations site today offered few details about the new phone. Other than providing a closeup image of part of the phone, the post only identified the November 11 release date and the #MoreLumia hashtag under a headline describing the device as «delivering the power of everyday mobile technology to everyone.»

Is a Bluetooth speaker that’s always listening creepy? And how much would you pay for Office mobile apps? We’ll address those questions and more in this look back at the week in tech.

When officers in «Star Trek: The Next Generation» spoke up and asked the omniscient computer for directions to a place, an answer to a question or simply for a cup of hot tea (you know what kind), our reaction was simple: Wow, I want that. Now, 20 years after the series went off the air, Amazon is offering us a taste of that very functionality with Echo — and everyone seems to think the idea is creepy.

I won’t delve into the cultural and technological shifts that have led to this change in perception, and while I confess I don’t necessarily want a retailer listening in on all my conversations, I do find the idea of Echo compelling. It’s a little, cylindrical Bluetooth speaker that contains Siri-like virtual assistant technology. Called Alexa, the assistant can spin up music for you by voice command, look up things on Wikipedia and generally help you out.

This week Google announced the launch of Android 5.0 Lollipop, the most radical design overhaul of Android since it launched in late 2008. Six weeks ago Apple announced iOS 8, one of the most exciting and expansive releases of iOS since it debuted in 2007 (under the name ‘Mobile OS X’). It is now time to put them head-to-head.

Design – Material Design vs Flat Design

For Apple the hard work was done last year with iOS 7. Out went Steve Jobs’ beloved skeuomorphism and in came minimalist flat design. It wasn’t met with universal praise and it certainly became more cartoonish, but iOS 7 was clean, modern and established Apple’s new design language.

iOS 8 builds on this good work adding more consistency and refining iconography, but it also has some smart design tweaks with regards to notifications, widgets, multi-tasking and keyboard interaction which I’ll go into in more detail in the Features section on the next page.

Samsung has introduced two new smartphones, the Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A3, which it is calling its ‘slimmest smartphones to date’.

The release comes off the back of its underwhelming earnings disclosure for Q3 2014 yesterday, during which it promised to introduce more desirable phones in an effort to recapture the high-level smartphone market.

The Galaxy A5 and A3 are both metallic-framed, moving away from the company’s traditional plastic bodies, and measure just 6.7mm and 6.9mm thick respectively.

The Galaxy A5 boasts a five inch screen, 2GB RAM, 1.2 GHz quad-core processor and 15 megapixel rear camera. The lower specc’ed Galaxy A3 has a 4.5 inch screen, 1GM RAM and an eight megapixel camera on the back. Both phones include a five megapixel front-facing camera, and run on Android KitKat.

If Google has its way, the world would in a few years be buying parts of their smartphone as they do with apps at the moment. No wonder the search and advertising giant, which seems to be nurturing device ambitions of late calls its Project Ara “the hardware version of Android”.

Like with Android, Mountain View wants to keep a grip on this open-source project and will itself build and sell the frame which forms the base of the new modular phone. It wants developers to create the modules that will go with it. This could be a keyboard module, a long-life battery or a zoom lens. The possibilities are so mind-boggling that it could change the way we use smartphones.

Those numbers helped the OS win a market share of 84 percent, up from 81.4 percent in the year-ago quarter. How taken with mobile advertising are marketers in the UK?

Twenty percent worth — at least for now — and the percentage is bound to grow.

That’s the takeaway from a new report from the Interactive Advertising Bureau and partner researcher PwC. The survey data showed that spending on digital advertising in the UK hit £3.46 billion in the first six months of 2014 – an increase of 16.6 per cent YOY.

Mobile spending is up from the 14 percent it garnered last year. And a whole lot of that advertising is native content.

“It’s imperative now, more than ever, for brand marketers to consider the messages we are communicating and where and when those messages are being consumed,” noted Owen Sagness, Microsoft UK general manager for advertising and online. “In 2014, ‘context is king’ – it’s vital to reach consumers where they are, on any screen, at any time, with the right message that encourages brand engagement. We are seeing the appetite for this continue to grow with native advertising accounting for 21 per cent of digital ad spend in the first half of 2014.”

Mobile marketing campaign launched by Unilever UK - QR Code Press | QR Code Press

Mobile marketing is starting to become a vital component to the overall advertising strategy of companies of all size, and Unilever UK has recently partnered with Future Ad Labs in order to create a campaign over this channel for their client, Gold from Flora.

Nearly half of all adults in the United Kingdom now own tablets, making tablet commerce and advertising critical.

With the penetration of ownership of these and smartphones in mind, interactive mobile marketing ads that step far beyond simply using videos is essentially a requirement for any strategy. In the case of Unilever UK, the ad encourages users to drag and drop a sunflower into a digital blender so that they can observe as it becomes Gold from Flora.

This mobile marketing advertisement is brief but interactive and draws clear attention to the brand.

women mobile marketing purseThe mobile ad is quick and cute and is enhanced by animations and fun graphics. The message is clear, but it’s also enjoyable and fun to receive, while being memorable and engaging for the device user. This is not the first time that Unilever has worked with Future Ad Labs. This second partnership is a part of Unilever’s recent investment of £10 million into mobile advertising and it is clear that this is only a jumping off point.

According to the senior vice president of sales at Future Ad Labs, Stephen Molloy, “We’re particularly excited to be expanding our product suite with the launch of PlayRoll.” He added that they will be creating and providing that campaign only over the mobile channel, using the “power of touch” to reach consumers and stick in their memories.

He explained that gesture based animations are at the very core of this mobile marketing campaign, and both PlayRoll and PlayCaptcha are using this in a “compelling way” in order to be able to best communicate with consumers. Moreover, it helps to provide a simple and yet highly targeted central message that he says is “proven to resonate” among consumers regardless of which channel is used to reach them.

Sure, we’ve seen apps that let you easily share files between your phone and PC. No biggie there. But the demo we’re about to show you is a tad more sophisticated than that. Over at MIT, two teams of researchers have developed a smartphone system called THAW, which allows you to share files and use the phone as a game controller — all by pressing the handset against your computer’s display. As you can see in the below demo video, for instance, it’s possible to transfer files onto the phone simply by dragging them where the phone is, as if it were just another folder on your desktop. Similar to what you can already do with NFC, you can press the phone against the screen, and walk away with whatever web page you had been looking at.

Connected devices set to double by 2020 | Second Screen | News | Rapid TV News

Multiscreen video will continue to expand in uptake as connected devices proliferate, according to ABI Research, which predicts that the installed base of active wireless connected devices will exceed 16 billion in 2014, about 20% more than in 2013.

And the number of connected devices, says the research company, will more than double from the current level, with 40.9 billion forecast for 2020.

However, video enablement may begin to shift from entertainment to business applications. «The driving force behind the surge in connections is that usual buzzword suspect, the Internet of Things (IoT),» said principal analyst Aapo Markkanen. «If we look at this year’s installed base, smartphones, PCs, and other ‘hub’ devices represent still 44% of the active total, but by end-2020 their share is set to drop to 32%. In other words, 75% of the growth between today and the end of the decade will come from non-hub devices: sensor nodes and accessories.»
