The new forms of media consumption are becoming increasingly popular in Germany with more than half (56%) of Germans watching TV programmes and videos on smartphones, tablets or laptops.56% of TV viewers frequently use a mobile device (second screen) in parallel to the TV programmes they are currently following on their TV set (first screen).These are results of the study Medienkonsum der Zukunft (Media consumption of the future) compiled by market research and consultancy company Goldmedia for German cable operator association ANGA. The results are based on a survey among 1,119 people above 18 years of age.

Mobile money technology not only boosts financial inclusion of households, but also helps small firms access finance, resulting in faster economic growth.

M-PESA has made quite some headlines since its introduction in 2007. After its launch, the mobile money technology became the payment method of choice across Kenya, given that its use poses lower risks than informal payment methods, storing money in mobile form implies lower risk than holding cash, and using M-PESA for payment purposes costs less than bank transfers. As of 2011, 70% of the adult population in Kenya had an M-PESA account (Jack and Suri 2011, 2014) and M-PESA has contributed to financial inclusion. There is evidence that the use of mobile money increases the use of formal savings accounts and allows for more effective risk sharing. In recent research, we show another important channel through which mobile money can enhance economic development. Namely, by allowing easier access to larger amounts of trade credit, mobile money allows firms higher production, with important macroeconomic repercussions.

Twitter’s building a second-screen experience for TV shows - The Next Web

itter is experimenting with TV Timelines, a new way to surface tweets and media related to TV shows on air, reports Mashable.

The feature, which is still being tested in Twitter’s iPhone app with a limited number of users, becomes available when you use a hashtag for some TV shows. Currently, American Idol, The Big Bang Theory, @Midnight and The Blacklist are participating in the social network’s experiment.

Once you’ve accepted the invitation to try TV Timelines for a certain show, the interface will display tweets, videos, GIFs and photos. Three columns — Highlights, Media and All — organize all the conversation and visual content related to a show.

National Geographic Channel today launched the second-screen experience for the upcoming three-hour television event KILLING JESUS, one of the network’s most ambitious digital undertakings ever. Available now at natgeotv.com/killingjesus, and designed in collaboration with digital agency Mullen, the site builds on the story depicted in the film by providing an interactive, multi-point-of-view experience.

The site — created by the Emmy-winning team behind the network’s Live From Space digital experience, the Emmy-nominated team behind Killing Lincoln and the multi-Cannes-Lion-winning team behind Killing Kennedy — is designed to give viewers an even deeper dive into the time of Jesus from three key perspectives, each symbolized by a different crown: the crown of thorns representing Jesus and his followers, a crown of laurels representing the Romans led by Pontius Pilate and a headdress representing the Jewish high priests of the time.

It’s a given that kids are logging more time on their tablets and smartphones than ever, but a new report from UK-based firm Childwise outlines just how much kids’ consumption habits have changed over the past 20 years—and what the future might hold.

Increasingly, the wealth of content available online and the popularity of YouTube are drawing kids and tweens to the internet over linear TV.

This theme emerges from Childwise’s first 20-year report, Connected Kids. The report includes data spanning the last two decades of UK children’s media and technology use, which is used to predict future trends.

Perhaps its most notable finding is that within the next two years, watching content via traditional TV  will no longer be a dominant childhood pastime, as kids are more likely to be spending that time online. Kids are increasingly expecting to choose the content with which they engage, so VOD services like Netflix will increasingly become the norm .

Adobe: mobile becoming the video viewing platform of choice | Second Screen | News | Rapid TV News

The video world is changing rapidly, and there is a tidal wave of mobile content making this happen says the US Digital Video 2014 Inaugural Report from Adobe.

The creative software firm says that the extent of the growth of the portable platform has been revealed clearly in data that found that with content becoming more mobile-device friendly, mobile connection speeds continuing to improve, and a host of new mobile devices coming onto the market, the possibility of the mobile device replacing the desktop as the primary viewing platform is becoming more realistic.

It found that devices such as the iPhone, which has boosted smartphone video completion rates with mobile device video viewing on smartphones, is continuing to gain popularity, with 75% year-on-year share growth. Mobile devices are becoming much more relevant in general online video consumption, with close to one-third of video starts occurring on a mobile device. The overall share of mobile video viewing has rissen from 6% in Q1 2012 to 27% in Q4 2014.

Mobile is growing faster than all other digital advertising mediums in the US, but one mobile format in particular is catching ad buyers’ eyes: Mobile video.

Mobile video ad revenue in the US will top over $4.4 billion in 2018, up by a five-year compound annual growth rate of 73% from 2013.

Mobile video ads will grow almost five-times faster than desktop: For comparison, desktop video ad revenue will grow by a CAGR of only 15% during the same time period.

Display, including rich-media ads, will grow even faster, propelled by the migration of desktop ads to mobile, which is where audiences are today. But the advantage of mobile video is that it can absorb advertisers’ video ad assets created for larger screens.
These insights are from a new BI Intelligence report on mobile advertising, which includes an exclusive forecast of the segments of the mobile ad market and how fast they will grow. These include display, video, social, and search. The report provides exclusive breakdowns on how spend on each format will grow and why, and examines the overall performance of mobile ads. It also looks at how programmatic ad-buying tools, including real-time bidding, are reshaping mobile advertising.

Here are some of the other key takeaways:

Display and video will be the fastest-growing mobile ad formats as digital ad dollars quickly shift from desktop to mobile, and ad products improve. US mobile display and mobile video ad revenues will grow at an astonishing CAGR of 96% and 73%, respectively, between 2013 and 2018.
But search and social media will still account for the largest share of US mobile ad revenue during the forecast period. Search is a strong format on mobile because of its convergence with local-mobile targeting.
Mobile programmatic ad revenues, including ads sold through real-time bidding (RTB), will account for 43% of US mobile display-related ad revenue in 2018, up from only a 6% share in 2013. But programmatic will still be limited by the lack of robust cookie-based targeting on mobile.
In-app mobile ads perform much better than mobile web ads, and ad spend will likely follow performance and usage. In-app click-through rates averaged 0.56% globally compared to 0.23% for mobile web ads during the first half of the year, according to Medialets.

Last year, we saw a holiday shopping season unlike any other. Samsung’s Note Edge isn’t like anything you’ve seen in mobile. Devices like the Galaxy Round and G Flex have come close. But rather than having a slight curve that serves no real purpose, Samsung’s phone tries to add some utility in a more interesting way. The entire right side gently slopes down to meet the back of the device, introducing an entirely new element to the experience. It’s something that will attract a lot of curious bystanders.

It makes sense that Google Maps needs your location and song-identifying Shazam needs access to your microphone, but why does a virtual pet, dictionary or wallpaper app need anything like that? Both iOS and Android have built-in flashlights, so you don’t even need an app.

Microsoft Reveals Non-Nokia Lumia Smartphone - Microsoft/Windows on CIO Today

smartphone, set to be released by Microsoft next Tuesday, will be the first without the Nokia brand name. Instead, leaked images of the new device show the Microsoft name and logo stamped prominently on the back of the orange handset.

The Nokia-to-Microsoft transition has been expected since Microsoft completed its acquisition of the Nokia Devices and Services business in April. Several Nokia smartphone apps — including Creative Studio, Panorama, Storyteller and Cinemagraph — have also recently been rebranded with the Lumia name.

A blog post on the Nokia Microsoft Conversations site today offered few details about the new phone. Other than providing a closeup image of part of the phone, the post only identified the November 11 release date and the #MoreLumia hashtag under a headline describing the device as «delivering the power of everyday mobile technology to everyone.»

Spanish people love their smartphones the most, followed by Russians and Germans.

This was found in a survey of 2,300 passengers from Europe taken by SITA, an IT and communications company for the airline industry.

To understand how technology affects people, SITA quizzed people from France, Germany, Spain, Russia and Britain for its 2014 Air Transport World Passenger Survey.

Russians followed by the British were the most satisfied with their travel experiences, and a total of 82 percent of people surveyed expressed satisfaction with their experience of travelling by airlines.

Spaniards were most likely to carry their smartphones, with 90 percent confessing to carrying their mobile devices while travelling, with Russians in second place at 83 percent followed by 78 percent of Germans.

The survey also indicated that Russians seemed to adapt to technology the fastest when it comes to travel, 67 percent of them using smartphone mobile apps followed by 59 percent of Spaniards and 46 percent of Brits.

When officers in «Star Trek: The Next Generation» spoke up and asked the omniscient computer for directions to a place, an answer to a question or simply for a cup of hot tea (you know what kind), our reaction was simple: Wow, I want that. Now, 20 years after the series went off the air, Amazon is offering us a taste of that very functionality with Echo — and everyone seems to think the idea is creepy.

I won’t delve into the cultural and technological shifts that have led to this change in perception, and while I confess I don’t necessarily want a retailer listening in on all my conversations, I do find the idea of Echo compelling. It’s a little, cylindrical Bluetooth speaker that contains Siri-like virtual assistant technology. Called Alexa, the assistant can spin up music for you by voice command, look up things on Wikipedia and generally help you out.

This week Google announced the launch of Android 5.0 Lollipop, the most radical design overhaul of Android since it launched in late 2008. Six weeks ago Apple announced iOS 8, one of the most exciting and expansive releases of iOS since it debuted in 2007 (under the name ‘Mobile OS X’). It is now time to put them head-to-head.

Design – Material Design vs Flat Design

For Apple the hard work was done last year with iOS 7. Out went Steve Jobs’ beloved skeuomorphism and in came minimalist flat design. It wasn’t met with universal praise and it certainly became more cartoonish, but iOS 7 was clean, modern and established Apple’s new design language.

iOS 8 builds on this good work adding more consistency and refining iconography, but it also has some smart design tweaks with regards to notifications, widgets, multi-tasking and keyboard interaction which I’ll go into in more detail in the Features section on the next page.

Viggle Makes A DVR Connection | Multichannel

Viggle, the second screen TV app specialist, will enable its advertising partners to tack on a new “Add-To-DVR” call-to-action to their mobile campaigns after baking in new technology developed by Opera Mediaworks.

 

Adapted from Viggle’s Reminder technology, the ad unit communicates with a user’s DVR in real time to set up a recording.

 

“We expect to see the Add-to-DVR option drive tune-in among consumers, as they are reminded about their favorite shows through websites, banner and mobile ads,” said Viggle president and COO Greg Consiglio, in a statement. “As an added benefit, viewers who check into any TV programs with the Viggle app will earn points that can be redeemed for free movies, TV shows and music at Viggle.com.”

FirstLook pre-feature program ads will work with the music-identifying app starting on Friday so that moviegoers can learn more about what’s on the screen, discover new music and receive promo offers, depending on the advertisement.

Most movie theaters prohibit phone use during films, but the Shazam ads most likely won’t interfere with your experience. FirstLook runs prior to the previews, before the lights dim as people are still shuffling in from the lobby. Theaters typically include an on-screen warning to silence your phone before the movie starts, an advisory that comes after the FirstLook feature.

Last month, CBS announced its All-Access subscription service, created for its most devoted followers. Now, the TV network will implement a big marketing push to get the service in front of as many of those fans’ eyes as possible.

CBS’s All-Access marketing plan has several different stages. The first resembles what many already-established video subscription services like Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon have done in the past. Put ads on TV to encourage viewers to watch their favorite shows through streaming methods. CBS’s TV promos for All-Access will start playing the week after Thanksgiving.

“December is a key month for our push,” said Marc DeBevoise, executive vice president of entertainment, sports and news, at CBS Interactive, to Variety. “It’s the time when the network has ended the first half of the season and goes into repeats and Christmas specials for a few weeks, then comes back in early January. It’s a unique time period and we are going to present something that’s very timely around catching up on the first half of the season.”

But the more I thought about it, the less I agreed with that quick judgment. Marketing is not dead, of course, but it is also not what we’ve come to think it is, and this is causing confusion for corporate leadership.

Marketing is far more than what it used to be just ten years ago. It may be more appropriate to say:

marketing died,

it wasn’t aware of its own death and

it came back as something more powerful than its previous self.

Traditional marketing is the practice of building awareness for a brand so that people will be more likely to purchase a product or service. It’s that simple.

Radio, TV, magazines, newspapers and classic websites are all efforts of true marketing. Marketing, up until the last decade, was primarily a one-way communication strategy. It was the sales team that engaged with buyers and tried to make the sale as quickly as they could.

The Digital Engagement Index increased 18%, reaching its highest level of the week, driven by substantial gains from McDonald’s, Discovery and the NFL. McDonald’s social engagement got a boost from its videos promoting the McRib, while Discovery’s enjoyed viral success on Youtube with «Eaten Alive Sneak Peek,» promoting a show where a researcher allows himself to be eaten by a large snake in the name of science.

People dance across the various “touchpoints” in highly idiosyncratic ways. Knowing with any degree of certainty that cross-platform messages are reaching the intended audience is hard enough. Calculating synchronized or sequential messaging across screens is a magnitude harder.

Maybe it is best to start with just two screens.

The mobile/TV connection is in many ways the most elusive but the most plausible connection to make across platforms. The high share of people consulting their handsets and tablets during prime time (about half, by some measures) makes the connection irresistible to advertisers, and perhaps imperative. People now have a reliable, even measurable, distraction from both programming and especially TV ad pods.

Based on the first six weeks of the current television season (though Sunday, Nov. 2), ABC is the most social broadcast network with 5.3 tweets in primetime, according to data from Nielsen Social. Comparably, this is an increase of 68 percent from the year-ago period. In the distant No. 2 spot overall is NBC at 2.0 million tweets, which is up by 30 percent, followed by 1.1 million for Fox (-62 percent) and 1.0 million for CBS (-12 percent).

The average results for The CW were not presented, and the decline for Fox is a result of plummeting traditional rating results in primetime.

By series, ABC’s “Scandal” is the season’s most social broadcast show with an average of 346, 609 tweets. Second is ABC’s “How to Get Away With Murder” with 142,406 tweets. And occupying the remainder of the Top 10 are “Supernatural” on The CW (118,838), “Once Upon a Time” on ABC (94,247), “Grey’s Anatomy” on ABC (92,077), “Dancing With the Stars” on ABC (80,166), “The Vampire Diaries” on The CW (70,425), NBC’s “The Voice” (64,905), NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” (51,832) and “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” on ABC (42,765).

Many people, including me, were wondering when Spotify would use its Connect feature — which launched just over a year ago — to connect their phone and desktop devices. Well, I’m pleased to say that this #firstworldproblem has been fixed, and you can now use your phone or tablet as a remote control for the tunes playing on your desktop.

The only stipulation is that you are a paying Spotify customer, but that’s always been the case for Spotify Connect — which lets you play music on WiFi-enabled devices in your vicinity, like speakers, using a mobile device. (Spotify has confirmed that just its iOS and Android apps are supported for now.)

Spotify Connect for computers uses the same setup as other hardware, and is easy to configure.

Ensuring that the Spotify app is open on your desktop, simply open up the app on your mobile and start playing a song. Then click through to the ‘now playing’ menu and open the connect icon in the bottom right corner of your screen.

The app provides a completely free live-streaming experience without the need for a cable subscription, which makes it one of the very few live streaming apps delivering this kind of service. The is ad-supported, which is the only caveat that we know of.

The app features a “60-minute format delivering live, updated news content from 9:00 AM – midnight ET every weekday at launch, and it takes advantage of the interactivity of digital platforms through a unique video player and on-screen interface.”

Samsung has introduced two new smartphones, the Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A3, which it is calling its ‘slimmest smartphones to date’.

The release comes off the back of its underwhelming earnings disclosure for Q3 2014 yesterday, during which it promised to introduce more desirable phones in an effort to recapture the high-level smartphone market.

The Galaxy A5 and A3 are both metallic-framed, moving away from the company’s traditional plastic bodies, and measure just 6.7mm and 6.9mm thick respectively.

The Galaxy A5 boasts a five inch screen, 2GB RAM, 1.2 GHz quad-core processor and 15 megapixel rear camera. The lower specc’ed Galaxy A3 has a 4.5 inch screen, 1GM RAM and an eight megapixel camera on the back. Both phones include a five megapixel front-facing camera, and run on Android KitKat.

Are car keys a thing of the past? If the team at NXP Semiconductors is correct in their vision, mobile devices will soon be the mechanism through which automobiles are unlocked and perhaps even started.

According to a new report from Reuters, Apple’s adoption of Near Field Communications technology is a game-changer for the future of NFC.

“Once they saw these announcements in September they kind of realized there was no going back on this technology so they better get moving and be quick on it,” Drue Freeman, Senior Vice President for global automotive sales and marketing at NXP, is quoted by Reuters.

It’s no coincidence that the company has just introduced a new lineup of NFC components made just for automobiles.

For now, Freeman won’t confirm which car makers might be among the first to integrate the technology, but European luxury car makers could roll out the first wave of NFC-ready rides in under two years.

Of course, conditions are rarely optimal. If there’s one bird in the area, there’s likely another, and sometimes the two songs can get mixed up. Making things more complicated is the fact that no two bird calls are identical, even if they’re from the same bird — they sound slightly different each time. Some birds learn new and different songs throughout their lives. And individual birds from the same species may sound different from each other.

The tech behind Warblr is not simple. It turns out identifying a natural sound like a bird’s call is much more difficult than identifying recorded music, which repeats the same pattern of notes every time.
