It’s no secret that internet users are no strangers to seeking out the information they need online — in fact, Google now processes over 40,000 search queries every second. And as the volume of search queries continues to climb, advertisers are recognizing an opportunity to introduce a number of different types of ads. (Think: pop-up ads, autoplaying video ads, and the dreaded mobile ad that takes up the entire phone screen.)

The new forms of media consumption are becoming increasingly popular in Germany with more than half (56%) of Germans watching TV programmes and videos on smartphones, tablets or laptops.56% of TV viewers frequently use a mobile device (second screen) in parallel to the TV programmes they are currently following on their TV set (first screen). These are results of the study Medienkonsum der Zukunft (Media consumption of the future) compiled by market research and consultancy company Goldmedia for German cable operator association ANGA. The results are based on a survey among 1,119 people above 18 years of age.

Mobile money technology not only boosts financial inclusion of households, but also helps small firms access finance, resulting in faster economic growth.

M-PESA has made quite some headlines since its introduction in 2007. After its launch, the mobile money technology became the payment method of choice across Kenya, given that its use poses lower risks than informal payment methods, storing money in mobile form implies lower risk than holding cash, and using M-PESA for payment purposes costs less than bank transfers. As of 2011, 70% of the adult population in Kenya had an M-PESA account (Jack and Suri 2011, 2014) and M-PESA has contributed to financial inclusion. There is evidence that the use of mobile money increases the use of formal savings accounts and allows for more effective risk sharing. In recent research, we show another important channel through which mobile money can enhance economic development. Namely, by allowing easier access to larger amounts of trade credit, mobile money allows firms higher production, with important macroeconomic repercussions.

Twitter’s building a second-screen experience for TV shows - The Next Web

itter is experimenting with TV Timelines, a new way to surface tweets and media related to TV shows on air, reports Mashable.

The feature, which is still being tested in Twitter’s iPhone app with a limited number of users, becomes available when you use a hashtag for some TV shows. Currently, American Idol, The Big Bang Theory, @Midnight and The Blacklist are participating in the social network’s experiment.

Once you’ve accepted the invitation to try TV Timelines for a certain show, the interface will display tweets, videos, GIFs and photos. Three columns — Highlights, Media and All — organize all the conversation and visual content related to a show.

National Geographic Channel Launches Ambitious Second-Screen Experience for KILLING JESUS: NatGeoTV.com/KillingJesus - Yahoo Finance

National Geographic Channel today launched the second-screen experience for the upcoming three-hour television event KILLING JESUS, one of the network’s most ambitious digital undertakings ever. Available now at natgeotv.com/killingjesus, and designed in collaboration with digital agency Mullen, the site builds on the story depicted in the film by providing an interactive, multi-point-of-view experience.

The site — created by the Emmy-winning team behind the network’s Live From Space digital experience, the Emmy-nominated team behind Killing Lincoln and the multi-Cannes-Lion-winning team behind Killing Kennedy — is designed to give viewers an even deeper dive into the time of Jesus from three key perspectives, each symbolized by a different crown: the crown of thorns representing Jesus and his followers, a crown of laurels representing the Romans led by Pontius Pilate and a headdress representing the Jewish high priests of the time.

It’s a given that kids are logging more time on their tablets and smartphones than ever, but a new report from UK-based firm Childwise outlines just how much kids’ consumption habits have changed over the past 20 years—and what the future might hold.

Increasingly, the wealth of content available online and the popularity of YouTube are drawing kids and tweens to the internet over linear TV.

This theme emerges from Childwise’s first 20-year report, Connected Kids. The report includes data spanning the last two decades of UK children’s media and technology use, which is used to predict future trends.

Perhaps its most notable finding is that within the next two years, watching content via traditional TV  will no longer be a dominant childhood pastime, as kids are more likely to be spending that time online. Kids are increasingly expecting to choose the content with which they engage, so VOD services like Netflix will increasingly become the norm .

Adobe: mobile becoming the video viewing platform of choice | Second Screen | News | Rapid TV News

The video world is changing rapidly, and there is a tidal wave of mobile content making this happen says the US Digital Video 2014 Inaugural Report from Adobe.

The creative software firm says that the extent of the growth of the portable platform has been revealed clearly in data that found that with content becoming more mobile-device friendly, mobile connection speeds continuing to improve, and a host of new mobile devices coming onto the market, the possibility of the mobile device replacing the desktop as the primary viewing platform is becoming more realistic.

It found that devices such as the iPhone, which has boosted smartphone video completion rates with mobile device video viewing on smartphones, is continuing to gain popularity, with 75% year-on-year share growth. Mobile devices are becoming much more relevant in general online video consumption, with close to one-third of video starts occurring on a mobile device. The overall share of mobile video viewing has rissen from 6% in Q1 2012 to 27% in Q4 2014.

Mobile is growing faster than all other digital advertising mediums in the US, but one mobile format in particular is catching ad buyers’ eyes: Mobile video.

Mobile video ad revenue in the US will top over $4.4 billion in 2018, up by a five-year compound annual growth rate of 73% from 2013.

Mobile video ads will grow almost five-times faster than desktop: For comparison, desktop video ad revenue will grow by a CAGR of only 15% during the same time period.

Display, including rich-media ads, will grow even faster, propelled by the migration of desktop ads to mobile, which is where audiences are today. But the advantage of mobile video is that it can absorb advertisers’ video ad assets created for larger screens.
These insights are from a new BI Intelligence report on mobile advertising, which includes an exclusive forecast of the segments of the mobile ad market and how fast they will grow. These include display, video, social, and search. The report provides exclusive breakdowns on how spend on each format will grow and why, and examines the overall performance of mobile ads. It also looks at how programmatic ad-buying tools, including real-time bidding, are reshaping mobile advertising.

Here are some of the other key takeaways:

Display and video will be the fastest-growing mobile ad formats as digital ad dollars quickly shift from desktop to mobile, and ad products improve. US mobile display and mobile video ad revenues will grow at an astonishing CAGR of 96% and 73%, respectively, between 2013 and 2018.
But search and social media will still account for the largest share of US mobile ad revenue during the forecast period. Search is a strong format on mobile because of its convergence with local-mobile targeting.
Mobile programmatic ad revenues, including ads sold through real-time bidding (RTB), will account for 43% of US mobile display-related ad revenue in 2018, up from only a 6% share in 2013. But programmatic will still be limited by the lack of robust cookie-based targeting on mobile.
In-app mobile ads perform much better than mobile web ads, and ad spend will likely follow performance and usage. In-app click-through rates averaged 0.56% globally compared to 0.23% for mobile web ads during the first half of the year, according to Medialets.

μέσω Mobile Video Is The Growth Area – Business Insider.

A convergence of three high-tech trends — precise ad analytics, programmatic audience-buying tools, and the stickiness of social apps — means social media is becoming one of the major ad platforms of the future.

New data from BI Intelligence finds that US social-media ad spend will top $8.5 billion this year and reach nearly $14 billion in 2018, up from just $6.1 billion in 2013. Social will grow faster than all other offline ad mediums, and faster than traditional digital formats, like desktop display ads and search ads.

In the report and associated PowerPoint presentation, BI Intelligence looks at all the numbers for this fast-growing ad industry and explores the drivers of social ad adoption.

Are you ready for Black Friday later this week? Target certainly is.

After a 40 store trial earlier in 2014, Target stores nationwide will be rolling out a new, more functional app named StoreMode, according to Search Engine Land, that will give unparalleled access to consumers as well as allowing the major retailer to monetize more of its services through advertising.

For example, once a customer enters any of Target’s 2,000  North American retail locations, geofencing will automatically connect with their smart phone and give them access to a wide range of new consumer capabilities, including maps to the specific store that will show them the actual location of a product in its specific aisle

A recent study by Razorfish and covered in depth by MediaPost revealed that half of Americans would do just about anything but watch an advertisement. On television, that means changing to a channel that isn’t on commercial break or only watching recorded television so they can fast-forward through commercials at will.Other countries are not as opposed to advertising as Americans are. That same study also looked at the behavior of Brazilian consumers, of whom, only 49% wanted to buzz through commercials, as opposed to the 50% of Americans who felt the same way.83% of the Brazilian respondents also said that advertisements help them find items to purchase. Only 58% of UK respondents felt that way about the ads they see. With a relatively high number of consumers preferring no advertisements at all, there has been a surge of premium channels and content carriers that are cutting advertisements.

If you run a local business focused predominately on customers in your local area, you may think that the global marketing capabilities of social media are not for you.

Think again! Social media is great for driving real customers through your door and has just as much value for a local business as is does for a global corporation.

Your Local Customers Are On Social Media

One very convincing reason to start looking at your social media channels from a local perspective is that the vast majority of businesses will find that their customers are already there! Whether you are a B2C operation, or B2B, social media has gone mainstream with over a third of the UK population logging on to Facebook every day: that’s potentially a third of your customers.

μέσω 5 Ways To Use Social Media For Local Marketing – Fourth Source.

Social media marketing is growing up, in large part due to the rapid development of sophisticated social media management platforms with capabilities that enable the social marketer to demonstrate tangible business results.

In recent weeks, major social platforms including Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram have announced richer analytics offerings, enabling marketers to track the performance of their efforts within the social networks and, in some cases, how those efforts impact downstream results. These new developments signal a paradigm shift in social data collection and analysis. Since its infancy, social has continued to evolve as a marketing and engagement strategy, and we’ve now reached the accountability phase of this evolution:

Observation: Watching social performance and making inferences

Experimentation: Taking these inferences, formulating hypotheses and testing them

Executive Mandate: Leveraging these insights from testing to delegate actions across platforms

Accountability: Taking responsibility for social marketing campaigns by measuring and optimizing performance

Last year, we saw a holiday shopping season unlike any other. A terrible winter storm blanketed most of the country with snow and the usual bout of procrastination led to an onslaught of online Christmas shopping that left UPS, FedEx, and the United States Postal Service is deep water (ice water, at that).

The shipping companies have already begun to take precautions to make sure this year is not as much of a fiasco as it last year. But if the Polar Vortexs and cyber shopping madness return, let’s hope the preparations will be adequate.

Of course, there are other obstacles, too — namely, the retailers with whom shipping companies are forced to work.

UPS, especially, has been on a campaign for retailers and ecommerce companies to move their biggest holiday sales to mid-December, as the WSJ recently reported. Why? Because that would give the shipping firms plenty of time to deliver the packages. Most retailers hold their most extravagant Christmas sales during the week leading up to Christmas.

Mobile devices allow you to enjoy the benefits of VoIP through superior apps. While there are plenty of VoIP apps for iOS, Android and BlackBerry, all the lists indicate that Skype and Viber are the most popular ones.

However, these two apps don’t work the same way and they would serve you differently. So which one should you install on your device?

Here is a Skype and Viber comparison based on different parameters.

Ease of Use

While both apps are user-friendly and easy to install, they work differently. Skype requires a username and a password. On the other hand, Viber does not require you to use a username, as it uses the cell phone number for identification purposes. This can be very handy with your cell phone, and contacts. It offers you a better mobile integration. Skype started on the computer platform before moving to mobile platform while Viber started exclusively on a mobile platform.

Do you like mini golf? Do you like it enough that you’d want to play so many holes that they can’t actually be counted? Golfinity aims to do just that. It’s a 2D mini golf game that presumably has  an infinite number of levels. If you’d rather run around shooting things, Monster Dash is probably what you’re looking for. It’s part of the Barry Steakfries Trilogy of games from Halfbrick Studios, so you know it must be good. And rounding out the top three is the second installment of the Walking Dead game. Continue the story as Clementine in the undead apocalypse.

Golfinity – This game is rather confident in its choice of names, so much so that the entire description of the game is a definition of the name: “A golf course longer than any assignable quantity or countable number.” For the math nerds out there, that means this game presumably is of cardinality Beth 1. But what’s important is that it’s a two dimensional mini golf game, which sounds great.

If you are really anxious to get Lollipop and don’t feel like waiting for the OTA update to roll out, you should read CNET’s terrific guide for rooting your phone and installing Lollipop on it.

Motorola devices: Motorola was quick to announce this week that the Pure Edition of the 2014 Moto X along with the unlocked versions of the Moto G are both getting the new update rolled out to them right now. The company has also very helpfully set up a terrific website where you can check for updates on when your device will be getting the upgrade. Working with a single monitor can be time-consuming for many professionals. With the Air Display 2 app, you can turn your iPad into a second screen. This allows you to do two really cool things. First, you can mirror your desktop or laptop screen (on Mac or Windows) on the iPad. This means that a colleague or family member can watch what’s happening on your computer on his or her own screen without crowding you. When mirroring your screen, you can then make changes from your desktop or from your iPad.

Samsung’s Note Edge isn’t like anything you’ve seen in mobile. Devices like the Galaxy Round and G Flex have come close. But rather than having a slight curve that serves no real purpose, Samsung’s phone tries to add some utility in a more interesting way. It’s an idea that seems like it was plucked right out of a Hollywood movie, and we’re still not sure what to make of it.

If you’ve already used the Note 4, the Note Edge will immediately feel familiar; you get the same specs, the same strong build, S Pen support, and chamfered edges that glisten under bright light. But obviously it’s that second screen that makes the Note Edge so different. The entire right side gently slopes down to meet the back of the device, introducing an entirely new element to the experience. It’s something that will attract a lot of curious bystanders.

Despite sharing a lot of the Note 4’s DNA, however, the Edge is slightly smaller, featuring a 5.6-inch screen rather than a 5.7-inch display; the extra curved panel adds an extra 160 pixels of width, though that space is generally used for second screen information. For example, when you’re in an application (like YouTube), that extra 160 pixel space will be a dedicated space that allows you to quickly access app shortcuts, settings, sports scores and more.

There’s been plenty written about how to create smart digital marketing content. But less attention gets paid to what happens after you click “publish” and whether your videos, infographics, social media posts, and other pieces of content are actually reaching the right people. According to Altimeter, only a quarter of content marketers actually invest in distribution, even though more than half recognize that it’s a critical need.Having a smart distribution model is just as important as developing good content in the first place — it’s how you bring in more business. So I’ve put together a distribution strategy refresher. Here are the critical steps for getting your content where it needs to go.

If I glanced through your smartphone or tablet, I bet most of the apps you installed are free. We all love free apps.

Often, free apps have a privacy cost. When you install an app, you probably never read the app’s terms and conditions. You merely click «Agree.» In the terms and conditions, the app developer typically reveals what data you are voluntarily handing over to them such as your online activities, location, contact list, text messages, and more.

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University recently analyzed the Google Play store’s top 100 apps operations, terms and conditions. They found the following 10 requested the most access to your smartphone or tablet’s hardware: Backgrounds HD Wallpaper, Brightest Flashlight, Dictionary.com, Google Maps, Horoscope, Mouse Trap, Pandora, Shazam, Talking Tom Virtual Pet.

It makes sense that Google Maps needs your location and song-identifying Shazam needs access to your microphone, but why does a virtual pet, dictionary or wallpaper app need anything like that? Both iOS and Android have built-in flashlights, so you don’t even need an app.

μέσω Careful: Some free apps can steal your data.

For those struggling with smartphones that seem to be constantly running out of storage space, a new application called PhotoShrinker can help. The app lets you free up space on your iPhone or Android smartphone by compressing photos up to 1/10th of their original size, potentially freeing up gigs of space, and making room for new photos or videos, apps, games, movies, music and more.

The newly shrunken photos can still be shared out to social networks like Facebook and Instagram, where they’ll look the same. It’s just that the photos on your phone won’t be as large in size as before.

This simple utility comes at a time when a number of iPhone users have chosen to skip upgrading to iOS 8. Recent data from Apple shows that only 56% of iOS users have moved to the company’s newest mobile operating system version, and that percentage has only increased by 4 percentage points since October. In comparison, iOS 7 climbed to 78% adoption at its peak.

Analytics company App Annie claims that suggestions that the popularity of smartphone apps is on the wane are greatly exaggerated.

Some have predicted that the number of apps being developed and downloaded will level off as consumer appetite reaches saturation point.

Both Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store have 1.3 million apps being actively developed and downloaded, and App Annie’s vice president of communications Marcos Sanchez is confident this number will continue to grow.

«A load of other firms like Deloitte have said things like ‘oh, no more apps are going to happen’ — what a load of shit. I’ve heard this all before. The number of apps can and will grow and swell».

Sanchez likens the growth of the app market to the initial stages of the worldwide web where rapid expansion has continued largely unchecked.

«The reality is that apps might not be quite as prolific as websites, but you can have niche apps that have 1,000 users and that’s fine because they make a couple of bucks off each user a month,» he said.

There’s no doubt that social media has changed the landscape for brands throughout the world.

Never before has it been possible to form immediate connections and have real-time conversations with your customers on a global scale.

If your business is considering joining the conversations on social media, or perhaps is already there, it’s essential you are using social media monitoring to ensure you are managing your social media accounts in a professional and reputable way.

As a business, your social media presence is your professional face to the world. In decades past, if you received a letter of complaint from a disgruntled customer, it was easy to ignore it and not take action.

However, in the digital age where social media has made conversations between brands and customers transparent for the world to see, no longer can you hide behind complaints and negative feedback.

μέσω Social Media Monitoring: Is Your Business Listening? | Catriona Pollard.

For years, companies have been betting big on social media. A recent BIA/Kelsey study found that U.S. corporate spending on social media advertising topped $5.1 billion in 2013, and researchers expect this number to reach $15 billion by 2018.

While a staggering 72 percent of U.S. adults use social media, according to Gallup’s 2014 State of the American Consumer report, they are not using these channels to connect with brands. Only 29 percent use social media to follow trends or find product reviews and information. Additionally, 62 percent of consumers said social media has no influence over their purchasing decisions.

Although social media is a powerful medium for understanding consumer opinions and learning about events as they happen, brands still struggle with driving meaningful engagement and aren’t seeing significant results from social activities.

However, the real-time nature of social media represents a significant growth opportunity for companies when applied to other channels, particularly email.

Spring Wants To Reinvent The Shopping Mall For Your Phone | Fast Company | Business + Innovation

What, you ask, is that crashing noise? It’s the sound of consumer resistance to mobile shopping crumbling. “Every single transactional property on mobile—whether that’s Uber, or Hotel Tonight—is lowering the barrier to make significant transactions on your mobile phone,” says David Tisch. If you can hail a ride and book a room, why would not also want to buy a car or lease an apartment? That’s what Tisch is betting on, anyway. He and his brother Alan are the co-founders of Spring, an app that debuted this fall trying to bring the entire world of fashion—high and low—to your phone. Of the more than 250 brands represented on Spring, most are middle-of-the-road, labels like Reformation and Vince, and almost half of the products Spring carries fall into the $100-$500 price range. Unlike a lot of other entrants into the mobile e-commerce aka «m-commerce» space, however, Spring also offers a deep selection of offering from the low and high ends of the fashion spectrum, from Levi’s to Carolina Herrera, putting Spring in a class virtually all its own.

The Biggest E-Commerce Industry Trends - Business Insider

Mobile allows traditional retailers a chance to catch up in e-commerce.

Using smartphones and tablets as shopping devices is a relatively new trend, and legacy retailers are using it to catch up to the original e-commerce giants. For example, Target’s audience is more mobile-centric now than even Amazon’s.

In a new report, BI Intelligence takes an exhaustive look at the e-commerce market, looks at mobile’s surge, estimates holiday sales and shipments, tracks consumer behavior, and outlines the mobile and online strategies that retailers are using to catch up in e-commerce.

The financial results from Alibaba’s first publicly traded quarter have now been announced and, along with those drooping figures, the company has also revealed its new strategy to inject some life back into its profits by backing investments into mobile marketing and m-commerce.

This occurred despite the fact that the company saw a massive surge of 54 percent in the company’s revenues, based on a powerful user demand. The results that were recently released showed that the company is using a strategy that is not entirely unlike one of its rivals, Amazon, the American e-commerce giant. This strategy involves using investments into mobile marketing, m-commerce, and other areas within itself in order to be able to boost its own growth over the long term.

Microsoft Reveals Non-Nokia Lumia Smartphone - Microsoft/Windows on CIO Today

smartphone, set to be released by Microsoft next Tuesday, will be the first without the Nokia brand name. Instead, leaked images of the new device show the Microsoft name and logo stamped prominently on the back of the orange handset.

The Nokia-to-Microsoft transition has been expected since Microsoft completed its acquisition of the Nokia Devices and Services business in April. Several Nokia smartphone apps — including Creative Studio, Panorama, Storyteller and Cinemagraph — have also recently been rebranded with the Lumia name.

A blog post on the Nokia Microsoft Conversations site today offered few details about the new phone. Other than providing a closeup image of part of the phone, the post only identified the November 11 release date and the #MoreLumia hashtag under a headline describing the device as «delivering the power of everyday mobile technology to everyone.»

Spanish people love their smartphones the most, followed by Russians and Germans.

This was found in a survey of 2,300 passengers from Europe taken by SITA, an IT and communications company for the airline industry.

To understand how technology affects people, SITA quizzed people from France, Germany, Spain, Russia and Britain for its 2014 Air Transport World Passenger Survey.

Russians followed by the British were the most satisfied with their travel experiences, and a total of 82 percent of people surveyed expressed satisfaction with their experience of travelling by airlines.

Spaniards were most likely to carry their smartphones, with 90 percent confessing to carrying their mobile devices while travelling, with Russians in second place at 83 percent followed by 78 percent of Germans.

The survey also indicated that Russians seemed to adapt to technology the fastest when it comes to travel, 67 percent of them using smartphone mobile apps followed by 59 percent of Spaniards and 46 percent of Brits.

10 dating apps to get your love life back on track | Technology | The Guardian

Internet dating has certainly taken a new technological turn and is migrating from desktop to smartphone. Yet this isn’t solely inspired by convenience: developers have been quick to build apps that take advantage of the smartphone’s features to oil the dating wheels.

They exploit the location tracking, the frictionless snap-and-send of smartphone photography and the always-on bantering of messaging software to create a less formal experience than web-based sites.

Ease of use, slick design – often more like a game than just a useful tool – these apps provide not just a connective launch pad but a source of entertainment for their users.

And unlike dating sites, most of these apps are free (though how their business models work is still rather vague).

Is a Bluetooth speaker that’s always listening creepy? And how much would you pay for Office mobile apps? We’ll address those questions and more in this look back at the week in tech.

When officers in «Star Trek: The Next Generation» spoke up and asked the omniscient computer for directions to a place, an answer to a question or simply for a cup of hot tea (you know what kind), our reaction was simple: Wow, I want that. Now, 20 years after the series went off the air, Amazon is offering us a taste of that very functionality with Echo — and everyone seems to think the idea is creepy.

I won’t delve into the cultural and technological shifts that have led to this change in perception, and while I confess I don’t necessarily want a retailer listening in on all my conversations, I do find the idea of Echo compelling. It’s a little, cylindrical Bluetooth speaker that contains Siri-like virtual assistant technology. Called Alexa, the assistant can spin up music for you by voice command, look up things on Wikipedia and generally help you out.

This week Google announced the launch of Android 5.0 Lollipop, the most radical design overhaul of Android since it launched in late 2008. Six weeks ago Apple announced iOS 8, one of the most exciting and expansive releases of iOS since it debuted in 2007 (under the name ‘Mobile OS X’). It is now time to put them head-to-head.

Design – Material Design vs Flat Design

For Apple the hard work was done last year with iOS 7. Out went Steve Jobs’ beloved skeuomorphism and in came minimalist flat design. It wasn’t met with universal praise and it certainly became more cartoonish, but iOS 7 was clean, modern and established Apple’s new design language.

iOS 8 builds on this good work adding more consistency and refining iconography, but it also has some smart design tweaks with regards to notifications, widgets, multi-tasking and keyboard interaction which I’ll go into in more detail in the Features section on the next page.

Viggle, the second screen TV app specialist, will enable its advertising partners to tack on a new “Add-To-DVR” call-to-action to their mobile campaigns after baking in new technology developed by Opera Mediaworks.

Adapted from Viggle’s Reminder technology, the ad unit communicates with a user’s DVR in real time to set up a recording.

“We expect to see the Add-to-DVR option drive tune-in among consumers, as they are reminded about their favorite shows through websites, banner and mobile ads,” said Viggle president and COO Greg Consiglio, in a statement. “As an added benefit, viewers who check into any TV programs with the Viggle app will earn points that can be redeemed for free movies, TV shows and music at Viggle.com.”

When someone’s cellphone lights up in a dark theater, it often induces a collective groan from the other movie-goers. But now, Shazam is giving people an incentive to take out their mobile devices at screenings.

Don’t worry, though. It’s only before the movie and trailers start.

FirstLook pre-feature program ads will work with the music-identifying app starting on Friday so that moviegoers can learn more about what’s on the screen, discover new music and receive promo offers, depending on the advertisement.

Most movie theaters prohibit phone use during films, but the Shazam ads most likely won’t interfere with your experience. FirstLook runs prior to the previews, before the lights dim as people are still shuffling in from the lobby. Theaters typically include an on-screen warning to silence your phone before the movie starts, an advisory that comes after the FirstLook feature.

Last month, CBS announced its All-Access subscription service, created for its most devoted followers. Now, the TV network will implement a big marketing push to get the service in front of as many of those fans’ eyes as possible.

CBS’s All-Access marketing plan has several different stages. The first resembles what many already-established video subscription services like Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon have done in the past. Put ads on TV to encourage viewers to watch their favorite shows through streaming methods. CBS’s TV promos for All-Access will start playing the week after Thanksgiving.

“December is a key month for our push,” said Marc DeBevoise, executive vice president of entertainment, sports and news, at CBS Interactive, to Variety. “It’s the time when the network has ended the first half of the season and goes into repeats and Christmas specials for a few weeks, then comes back in early January. It’s a unique time period and we are going to present something that’s very timely around catching up on the first half of the season.”

We asked several participants in the upcoming Techonomy 2014 conference to write an article for us on what they are passionate about right now.

Peter Drucker famously argued in the 1950s that data would allow us to “know and understand [the] customer so well, products [would] sell themselves.” For decades, it has promised to revolutionize business, allowing marketers to become more customer-centric, develop more personal campaigns, and create more efficient processes. In the early 1990s, Don Peppers and Martha Rogers predicted the impact of data and the Internet, outlining the end of mass marketing and the dawning of a “one-to-one” age. But this glorious future remains a fantasy.

μέσω How Data Is Failing Marketers.

I thought about titling this post “Marketing is Dead.”

But the more I thought about it, the less I agreed with that quick judgment. Marketing is not dead, of course, but it is also not what we’ve come to think it is, and this is causing confusion for corporate leadership.

Marketing is far more than what it used to be just ten years ago. It may be more appropriate to say:

marketing died,

it wasn’t aware of its own death and

it came back as something more powerful than its previous self.

Traditional marketing is the practice of building awareness for a brand so that people will be more likely to purchase a product or service. It’s that simple.

Radio, TV, magazines, newspapers and classic websites are all efforts of true marketing. Marketing, up until the last decade, was primarily a one-way communication strategy. It was the sales team that engaged with buyers and tried to make the sale as quickly as they could.

When it comes to the number of options for mobile ads that are currently available for brands and companies, there is certainly no shortage, but recent findings have found that some are more effective than others.

Many brands are, therefore, opting to focus not on a single type of mobile ads, but rather on the diversification of their efforts. This, despite the fact that social media marketing has been shown to be quite effective when it comes to communication with consumers over smartphones and tablets. The issue at the moment is that brands and companies know that this channel is a vital one, despite the fact that it is very new and involves a considerable degree of inconsistency.

The Race To Marry Big And Little Screens 11/07/2014

Among the biggest challenges to creating more integrated media plans that account for a new age of fragmentation is simply understanding how screens work with one another in people’s lives. People dance across the various “touchpoints” in highly idiosyncratic ways. Knowing with any degree of certainty that cross-platform messages are reaching the intended audience is hard enough. Calculating synchronized or sequential messaging across screens is a magnitude harder.

Maybe it is best to start with just two screens.

The mobile/TV connection is in many ways the most elusive but the most plausible connection to make across platforms. The high share of people consulting their handsets and tablets during prime time (about half, by some measures) makes the connection irresistible to advertisers, and perhaps imperative. People now have a reliable, even measurable, distraction from both programming and especially TV ad pods.

Based on the first six weeks of the current television season (though Sunday, Nov. 2), ABC is the most social broadcast network with 5.3 tweets in primetime, according to data from Nielsen Social. Comparably, this is an increase of 68 percent from the year-ago period. In the distant No. 2 spot overall is NBC at 2.0 million tweets, which is up by 30 percent, followed by 1.1 million for Fox (-62 percent) and 1.0 million for CBS (-12 percent).

The average results for The CW were not presented, and the decline for Fox is a result of plummeting traditional rating results in primetime.

By series, ABC’s “Scandal” is the season’s most social broadcast show with an average of 346, 609 tweets. Second is ABC’s “How to Get Away With Murder” with 142,406 tweets. And occupying the remainder of the Top 10 are “Supernatural” on The CW (118,838), “Once Upon a Time” on ABC (94,247), “Grey’s Anatomy” on ABC (92,077), “Dancing With the Stars” on ABC (80,166), “The Vampire Diaries” on The CW (70,425), NBC’s “The Voice” (64,905), NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” (51,832) and “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” on ABC (42,765).

Many people, including me, were wondering when Spotify would use its Connect feature — which launched just over a year ago — to connect their phone and desktop devices. Well, I’m pleased to say that this #firstworldproblem has been fixed, and you can now use your phone or tablet as a remote control for the tunes playing on your desktop.

The only stipulation is that you are a paying Spotify customer, but that’s always been the case for Spotify Connect — which lets you play music on WiFi-enabled devices in your vicinity, like speakers, using a mobile device. (Spotify has confirmed that just its iOS and Android apps are supported for now.)

Spotify Connect for computers uses the same setup as other hardware, and is easy to configure.

Ensuring that the Spotify app is open on your desktop, simply open up the app on your mobile and start playing a song. Then click through to the ‘now playing’ menu and open the connect icon in the bottom right corner of your screen.

Are car keys a thing of the past? If the team at NXP Semiconductors is correct in their vision, mobile devices will soon be the mechanism through which automobiles are unlocked and perhaps even started.

According to a new report from Reuters, Apple’s adoption of Near Field Communications technology is a game-changer for the future of NFC.

“Once they saw these announcements in September they kind of realized there was no going back on this technology so they better get moving and be quick on it,” Drue Freeman, Senior Vice President for global automotive sales and marketing at NXP, is quoted by Reuters.

It’s no coincidence that the company has just introduced a new lineup of NFC components made just for automobiles.

For now, Freeman won’t confirm which car makers might be among the first to integrate the technology, but European luxury car makers could roll out the first wave of NFC-ready rides in under two years.

«The good news is, I am not talking about the state of the newspaper industry,» says Amy Mitchell, prompting chuckles from the audience. Mitchell works for the Washington-based think tank PEW Research, which focuses on social issues and public opinion. She is one of the keynote speakers at a workshop at City University of New York (CUNY). «TV remains the number one way of how people get news,» Mitchell explains. «But it is declining. And it is declining pretty rapidly.»

PEW studies show that among 18 to 29-year-old viewers only 30 percent consume their news via linear TV. Eight years ago, 42 percent watched their news on TV.

«We did not come here to bury TV, but to reinvent it,» says journalism professor Jeff Jarvis. Desperation, he says, has hit newspapers and magazines and forced them to think about new opportunities. TV would need to be faster and react now, before desperation grabs hold of the industry as well. «Bashing and whining is not allowed. Today is about possibilities,» Jarvis adds and gives every participant the opportunity to introduce an idea.

Shazam for birds? Shazam for birds — Tech News and Analysis

The idea behind Warblr is simple: Like Shazam, it allows you to record a clip of a bird singing, then the app compares it to a database and returns what it believes is the most likely match. According to the Kickstarter, the app has a 95 percent accuracy rate under optimum conditions. Currently, the app can identify 80 British birds.

Of course, conditions are rarely optimal. If there’s one bird in the area, there’s likely another, and sometimes the two songs can get mixed up. Making things more complicated is the fact that no two bird calls are identical, even if they’re from the same bird — they sound slightly different each time. Some birds learn new and different songs throughout their lives. And individual birds from the same species may sound different from each other.

The tech behind Warblr is not simple. It turns out identifying a natural sound like a bird’s call is much more difficult than identifying recorded music, which repeats the same pattern of notes every time.

A quick recap of the past tells us that the digital age of the 80s and early 90s had enabled marketers to reap the benefits of cost effective and one-to-one marketing channels such as e-mails. With advancements in technology and rapid growth of e-commerce – in the mid-90s and early 2000 – marketing channels became more directed and personal. However, the (digital) marketing revolution came with the evolution of social media channels, which enabled people to connect and share, giving rise to a whole new arena of C2C communications. It was just a matter of time for the companies, across B2B and B2C spectrum, to realise the vast potential of capturing and leveraging the “voice of customer” to enable growth and profitability. The transformation, however, is not just limited to the marketplace but also how customers make purchase decisions.

This emerging trend of C2C conversations poses itself both as a challenge and a potential opportunity for marketers to leverage. By committing and channelising marketing efforts towards collaboration with customers, marketers can infuse a sense of belongingness and ownership in the minds of the best marketing consultants and ambassadors they can bring on board – the customers.
